How to Make Bandana Pumpkins: Step-by-Step

This DIY fabric pumpkin project makes a coordinating set of three:

• 1 large bandana pumpkin

• 1 medium bandana pumpkin

• 1 small bandana pumpkin

The project requires no stitching, making it an approachable seasonal craft for beginners. Plan on approximately 45–60 minutes of crafting time, plus drying time.

Step 1: Cut the Pumpkin Pieces

Start by cutting out the printed pumpkin, interfacing, and stem patterns.

Fold the bandana in half so you can cut the two matching fabric pieces for each pumpkin at the same time. Before cutting, position each pattern over the part of the bandana print you would like to feature.

Clip the pattern and folded fabric together, then cut around the outside edge. Repeat for the large, medium, and small pumpkins.

Next, fold the fusible interfacing in half and cut two matching interfacing pieces for each pumpkin.

Fall craft tip: Take a moment to experiment with pattern placement before cutting. Using different areas of the paisley design gives each fabric pumpkin a slightly different look while keeping the trio coordinated.

Step 2: Reinforce and Assemble the Pumpkin Shells

Center a piece of fusible interfacing on the wrong side of each bandana pumpkin piece, with the rough fusible side touching the fabric.

An adult should iron it covered with a cotton cloth with the interfacing centered in place.

Once the fabric has cooled, mark the center of each pumpkin piece. Gently press a plastic needle against the center mark to create a small fold, without piercing the fabric, and carefully snip a small center hole.

Place the two matching pumpkin pieces together with the printed right sides facing each other.

Apply a thin line of fabric glue around the edge, following the glue line on the pattern. Leave the marked opening unglued so you can turn and stuff the pumpkin later.

Let the glued pumpkin shells dry completely.

Step 3: Make the Felt Pumpkin Stems

While the shells dry, make the three felt stems.

Cut the felt using the matching stem patterns. Fold the bottom of each stem across the slit markings, secure the fold with a sewing clip, and carefully cut the small slits.

Thread the elastic through the slits and tie it near one end, leaving a long elastic tail.

Roll the felt tightly to create the stem, hiding the elastic inside while allowing the long tail to extend from the bottom. Secure the rolled felt with a glue dot.

Repeat until you have a stem for each pumpkin.

Step 4: Turn, Stuff, and Close the Pumpkins

Once the glued shells are completely dry, carefully turn each one right side out through the opening.

Add stuffing until the pumpkin is evenly filled but still soft enough to shape. Avoid overstuffing—the pumpkin needs some flexibility for the cord to create its rounded sections.

Fold the raw edges of the opening inward, hold them in place with sewing clips, and apply a small amount of fabric glue inside the folded edge.

Let the pumpkins dry before shaping them.

At this point, your project will look more like three soft fabric cushions. The next step is what gives them their recognizable pumpkin shape.

Step 5: Shape the Pumpkins with Cord

Thread the long elastic from the felt stem through the center of the stuffed pumpkin, entering at the top and exiting through the bottom. Leave the elastic loose for now.

Next, thread macramé cord through the center.

Bring the cord around the outside of the pumpkin and back through the center. Gently tighten it to create the first groove.

Make the next loop on the opposite side and continue working around the pumpkin until the cord creates eight sections.

Adjust the stuffing and cord as you work until you like the shape.

Secure the cord at the top and bottom with knots. Then pull the stem elastic from underneath until the felt stem sits firmly against the top of the pumpkin. Tie the elastic securely to the cord at the bottom and trim away the excess.

Repeat the shaping process for the other two sizes.
